It was a day filled with joy and anticipation as I joined 80 people in Guatemala City to celebrate Britany’s quinceañera. Britany, the beloved sister of our godson Manny, has always held a special place in my heart. From afar, I have cherished the bond I’ve cultivated with her over the years, thanks to my annual visits to her family throughout the past decade. Britany’s childhood is a testament to the power of love, compassion, and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on my heart.

As I stood before the radiant faces of Britany’s family and friends, entrusted with the honor of sharing a reflection that would encapsulate the essence of our connection, a vivid memory sprang to mind. This memory carries timeless lessons that resonate deeply with my core belief in love transcending borders.
In the early days of Manny’s life, tragic circumstances led to his mother’s imprisonment and subsequent deportation. In that tender time, my wife Charlotte and I stepped forward, becoming the caring guardians of Manny for his first 15 months. During this period, infant Manny discovered comfort in embracing a well-worn stuffed rabbit named Bo. Night after night, he found solace and security in clinging to Bo. And even now, at 11, Manny still sleeps soundly with his faithful plush companion.
Over the years, Bo began to show signs of wear and aging. One of Bo’s arms had come off, yet Manny’s love for his steadfast friend remained unwavering.
At twelve, Britany embarked on a compassionate mission. She crafted a new companion for Bo, named Boa. What speaks volumes about Britany’s empathic heart is that she deliberately made Boa with one arm, just like Bo.
In Britany’s act of kindness, we glimpse the transformative potential of love. Within this simple gesture lies a profound truth that our world longs for—a reminder that solidarity and empathy possess immense healing power.

That day, it was not just Britany’s quinceañera that we celebrated. We celebrated the awe-inspiring beauty of connection, the unwavering strength found in acts of selfless love, and the profound transformation that compassion can bring.
In honoring Britany’s quinceañera, we celebrated her coming of age, even though she is already a wise soul. Britany’s selflessness reminds us of our shared responsibility—to embrace each other’s vulnerabilities and offer unwavering support through life’s trials and triumphs.
I am grateful Bo has Boa as his companion. I’m even more grateful Manny and Britany have one another as siblings and companions for life. Let’s all offer the radical companionship of a quinceañera.
